PC-Rdist Tribute Page

  • The last run of PC-Rdist

The last computer being fully maintained by PC-Rdist in a production lab environment was PC-Rdisted for the last time at 16:15 CST on January 16, 2012, on the fourth floor of the Gould Library at Carleton College in Northfield, MN. It was a Dell Optiplex GX620, running Windows XP SP3, hooked up to a microform reader at the reference desk.

  • The history of PC-Rdist

PC-Rdist was a tool we used to maintain Windows lab and classroom computers. It used file and registry synchronization to keep all the lab machines clean and up to date. By allowing it to run for approximately 90 seconds after each logout, we were able to distribute patches, updates and configuration changes to lab computers without visiting them or requiring scheduled downtime for maintenance.

PC-Rdist was a product of Pyzzo Software, a company founded by Chris Volkert. PC-Rdist became a popular lab management tool during the heyday of Windows 95, and was still in use in various IT shops when Pyzzo closed its doors in the summer of 2004.

Pcrdist.org was supposed to become a launch pad for moving PC-Rdist 3.0 to an open source development model. PC-Rdist 2.0.6 was available for free download here for a short time, but the source for 3.0 was never released.

I would like this site to remain a tribute to PC-Rdist, and the over 14 years of solid, reliable and flexible lab management it made possible.
